Roads 06:05
I feel the ashes swirl around me I’m covering my eyes I’m looking down on dried up soil Been walking on for miles Abandoned houses I’m waiting for a sign of life I’m waiting for a guiding light No hills or valleys And as I walk these roads I find A wasteland of an empty mind Why is there no end in sight As all these years are passing by Memories of better days Are slowly fading into grey I feel the ashes all around me Covering my lungs I’m gazing into fallen skies I’m always on the run Close to the ruins The remnants of an empty home Forgotten people left alone No roof or shelter And as I lose myself I find Reflections of a broken mind Why is there no end in sight As all these years are passing by Memories of better days Are slowly fading into grey Why is there no morning light As all these clouds still paint the sky Memories of brighter days Are slowly fading into grey The seasons change Their bones they shake With no place to go And they still walk alone They need a change To rearrange The pieces of A world that slowly fades

Fake Doors 03:42
The silence drowns Our world like underwater sounds The sky above Without a motion in the clouds I’m washed away All of my thoughts have gone astray Within the bay As empty shells without a name Suddenly the story folds Of a world we used to know Not a lesson to be taught The curtain falls, we come undone My inner sense is gone You swear you’ll be okay While we await the sun To shine on our mistakes Your headlights shut And turn their back before the dark Caught up in thoughts Like we would never walk this path So hide my notes Deep in the cupboard to your toes Right where you know They’re far too close to let them go Suddenly the story folds Of a world we used to know Not a lesson to be taught The curtain falls, we come undone My inner sense is gone You swear you’ll be okay While we await the sun To shine on our mistakes Suddenly the story folds Of a world we used to know Not a lesson to be taught The curtain falls, we come undone My inner sense is gone You swear you’ll be okay While we await the sun To shine on our mistakes

Hard To Know 05:05
It’s hard to calculate the risk It’s hard to know what could go wrong It’s hard to know if you’ll be missed And it’s hard to know if you’ll stay strong But I know you You’ll break through The walls in you It’s hard to calculate the risk It’s hard to know what could go wrong It’s hard to know if you’ll be missed And it’s hard to know if you’ll stay strong But I know you You’ll break through The walls in you

Why We Are 03:42
Whitened scars on our faith Hidden marks of mistakes Are all we’ve built Are all we’ve kept When you call out my name We run out of our frames I always will Hold on again And all the streetlights in the water Like a window to the stars Why we are And the night air’s getting warmer As we wander in the dark Why we are Whitened scars on our faith We can mend our mistakes With all we build With all we save And all the streetlights in the water Like a window to the stars Why we are And the night air’s getting warmer As we wander in the dark Why we are Tomorrow awakes When you call out my name I always will

Out in the open Cut off from any other soul The wood is creaking The helm is turning on its own My boat is leaning Oh would I dive to reach the shore I can't be silent anymore Silent anymore Feel me shout Hear me calling out Carrying what’s left The easy way out I’m sick of losing what I found So I’ll keep you safe in sound Taking what is left The easy way out now As your door’s closing Now is the time that I let go No grand delusions No longer swallowed in befores All good solutions Concede they're harder to ignore I can't stay silent anymore Silent anymore Feel me shout Hear me calling out Carrying what’s left The easy way out I’m sick of losing what I found So I’ll keep you safe in sound Taking what is left The easy way out now Hear me, hear me calling Can we take this chance and Will we see the shore so Keep me coming closer Have we found the answers Ending where we’re starting

Your Arms 05:57
Forever and ever ago I thought that I wasn’t alone We made some mistakes but I stayed Safe in your warming embrace Every time I realise What you mean with that look in your eyes Your promises make me forget That I’ll do something and I’ll regret That I always lived in disguise That I always stood by your side I hope there is some other way But you’re all that I have so I’ll Fall into your arms again Crawling, calling out for help Drowning in the bitter scent The bitter scent of innocence Every time I realise What you mean with that look in your eyes Your promises make me forget That I’ll do something and I’ll regret That I always lived in disguise That I always stood by your side I hope there is some other way But you’re all that I have so I’ll Fall into your arms again Crawling, calling out for help Drowning in the bitter scent The bitter scent of innocence Every time I realise What you mean with that look in your eyes Your promises make me forget That I’ll do something and I’ll regret Every time I realise That you mean to be truthful inside I can’t close my eyes and forget That I’ll do something and I’ll regret

Sleep 04:32
It’s 3:00 a.m. I’m staring back at my reflection Facing all my imperfections In an endless room It’s 3:00 a.m. In a fight with without directions Pulling back from all distractions As I follow through I felt too close To let it go This haunted house of ghosts When you lie in bed at night And you can’t find sleep Thinking ’bout the times We used to meet It’s 4:00 a.m. I’m losing sense of my devotion Letting go of every notion That I thought I knew It’s 5:00 a.m. As I try to stay in motion Leaving traces in the ocean I will fall into I felt too close To let it go This haunted house of ghosts When you lie in bed at night And you can’t find sleep Thinking ’bout the times We used to meet And it won’t be long ’til the morning comes As you’re walking on your own And it won’t be long ’til the morning comes As you’re walking all alone When you lie in bed at night And you can’t find sleep Thinking ‘bout the times We used to meet And it won’t be long ’til the morning comes As you’re walking on your own And it won’t be long ’til the morning comes As you’re walking all alone When you lie in bed at night And it won’t be long ’til the morning comes As you’re walking on your own And it won’t be long ’til the morning comes As you’re walking all alone And it won’t be long ’til the morning comes As you’re walking on your own And it won’t be long ’til the morning comes As you’re walking all alone

Gone 04:20
I’m thinking back to the life I’ve never had All the words to myself I’ve had to break I’ve been waiting for something new to come That’s giving me a place where I belong I’m looking back through the rear-view mirror now The road behind is so hard to figure out You always told me it doesn’t matter But in the end will it be much better And you told me not to be afraid To look forward to what lies ahead Am I gone now Did I take a step too much Am I getting out of touch now I’m thinking back to the life I could’ve had Promises to myself it’s gonna end I’m chasing something I still cannot describe Makes me feel like I’ve been left behind Isn’t that what I’ve always wanted A final place I grow close to again With new streets I’ve never walked before And many faces I’ll still get to know And you told me not to be afraid To look forward to what lies ahead Am I gone now Did I take a step too much Am I getting out of touch now Coming, going, never knowing And you told me not to be afraid Coming, going, never knowing To look forward to what lies ahead Coming, going, never knowing And you told me it will be alright Coming, going, never knowing To keep looking for the perfect sight Coming, going, never knowing And you told me not to be afraid Coming, going, never knowing To look forward to what lies ahead Coming, going, never knowing And you told me it will be alright Coming, going, never knowing To keep looking for the perfect sight Coming, going, never knowing

about

With "The Ground Beneath Our Feet", Small Strides present a debut album that represents a sound cosmos of its own in the band's history. The Düsseldorf-based musicians expand the straightforward indie rock of their early years with elements of post-rock, ambient and progressive. Their first long-player thus represents a consistent further development of the strengths of its predecessor, the EP "Crossings" (2019), which are thought even bigger here: For instance, there are more experimental sound creations, including iPads repurposed as electric guitars or voice samples distorted into percussion, and a greatly expanded sound palette, in which winding string movements can be found as well as pulsating synthesizers.
The stylistic extremes, from bedroom indie to drum'n'bass, are held together not only by the band itself, but above all by their love for shaping the songs atmospherically.

In addition, there is also a recurring theme connecting the eleven tracks: Created in a time of pandemics and social crises, the focus has shifted from the struggles within on "Crossings" to the conflicts between each other and their impact on one's own mental health: Isolation, loneliness and the desperate clinging to failed relationships create a distinct weight.
But there is also room for the positive, for finding shelter in unsettling times and self-discovery through companionship. Because for better or worse - in the end, we are all connected by the ground beneath our feet.

The internationally acclaimed Munich designer Simon Marchner (Death Cab for Cutie, Rolling Stones, ...) was once again responsible for the cover artwork. Furthermore, five music videos for the album's singles were created under the direction of Cologne-based photographer and videographer Timo Vogt (Dote, Carpet Waves, ...) – including a trilogy about two friends getting torn apart by life.
In terms of production, the band once again relied on their renowned team: The drums were recorded under the supervision of Duisburg-based producer Beray Habip (Kettcar, Beyond the Black, ...), while Alex Kloss (Giant Rooks, Jupiter Jones, ...) took care of the mastering.
